Sustainability Statement

This website is owned and managed by Alison Baird, Proprietor.

We are a farming family constantly exploring innovative ways to be sustainable and to be responsible guardians of our land in a climate of biodiversity loss and climate change. Our approach to sustainability is to future-proof our business in order to manage our guests and the landscape so that it remains protected and in the same family for generations to come.

Our Strategy

Our business strategy places sustainability at the core of every business decision and our guest experience. We are also actively taking steps to protect the area’s rich biodiversity (for example, bees, birds, butterflies, bats, plants, woodlands, hedges, and scrub amid a background of historic coastal erosion, long into the future.

Our Mission Statement

At The Piglets and Woodpecker Camping Field, we are committed to providing a peaceful, eco-conscious retreat where guests can reconnect with nature in comfort. Whether staying in our thoughtfully converted holiday barns or camping under the stars, we offer a welcoming, accessible, and well-equipped environment just a short walk from Climping Beach. Rooted in sustainability, we embrace green energy solutions and responsible tourism, ensuring a relaxing and memorable stay for families, friends and nature lovers alike.

Our Sustainability Journey…With Small Steps Comes Great Change

We focus on minimising our environmental impact and promoting responsible tourism and travel, including energy efficiency, waste reduction and local sourcing. We also strive to educate our guests on sustainable practices.

Starting small with positive behaviour changes, over the last few years we have progressively expanded our sustainability initiatives.

These include an investment of renewable technology such as a ground source heat pump and solar panels. This allows for incremental progress, adding up to significant change over time as well as cutting our operational costs to re-invest in our business and improve facilities for our guests.

Energy Efficiency

We prioritise energy-efficient appliances, lighting and heating systems. Our recent sustainable initiatives include:

  • Ground-source heat pump

  • Solar panels

  • Under-floor heating (including in our camping guests’ shower blocks)

  • We use energy-saving light bulbs and ensure that all appliances are energy efficient

  • We encourage guests to turn off lights and appliances when not in use

  • We use efficient heating systems and thermostats to minimise energy consumption

  • Motion Sensor Exterior Light Switches (Occupancy Sensors): these switches detect movement and turn lights on when someone enters a room and go off when the room is unoccupied. These are located in both Camping shower rooms and our Camp Facilities room.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

We implement comprehensive recycling programmes and encourage guests to participate. This includes:

  • We provide recycling bins for our guests including for glass

  • We aim to minimise single-use plastics and use refillable alternatives

Local Sourcing & Support

We promote local businesses and encourage guests to shop and dine locally reducing their carbon footprint and helping to sustain and boost the local economy

  • Where possible we source products and services from local businesses

  • We provide information about local attractions, activities and restaurants

  • We employ local staff to invest in the local economy

Water Consumption

We encourage water conservation practices. For example, we have introduced non-concussive taps in the Camping shower rooms and our washing machines have eco- friendly settings.

Transportation

We encourage guests to explore the area by foot, or public transport and provide information on local transport options.

We provide information on the local excellent bus service. We also provide a pre-arranged collection and return service for Campers arriving at the local train station.

There are bicycles to hire locally and kayaks for trips down the local River Arun.

Wildlife Friendly

We have introduced bird nesting boxes within the site such as for swifts and house martins. On our farm we have multiple bird boxes for many species. Climping Village Council has introduced a wildlife policy, Wild About Clymping, which includes installing nesting boxes all around the village and to protect hedgehogs.

Landscaping

We maintain our grounds in a way that supports local wildlife and biodiversity, potentially including planting native species and creating wildlife habitats. A margin around the fence is left to allow it to grow naturally. Our recent initiatives have included:

  • Wrap-around four-metre-high hedge specifically planted with varieties of fruit, seed, nuts and flowers throughout the season for the benefit of wildlife

  • Pathways and parking areas using the best sustainable material and supplies possible

  • Locally produced wood chippings for the pathways and hedge roots

  • Excess Shingle from the beach, dredged from the River Arun, has been used to maintain the main track across the Camping Field

Mindfulness & Wellbeing

Overall, we seek to promote rejuvenation with the power of reconnecting with nature. Wellbeing is important to us and we believe that the rejuvenation powers of nature encourage guests to engage with the immediate and local environment in mindful ways, such as nature walks, stargazing from our campsite or a short stroll to the beach to watch the power of nature unfold and the beauty of wildlife around it. We allow dogs to stay in both the camping field and our barns. The local fields are dog-friendly so that everyone, all creatures small and large and convene with nature by the sea.

We deliberately do not have play parks or play equipment other than a mown grass area with large tree logs and a set of goal posts so that children and their families can enjoy making up games and playing with other families staying on the camping field. The evenings resonate with the sound of these new friends laughing and playing together before all are tired out and go to sleep!
